| La Crosse or LaCrosse is a town in Alachua County. It is 15 miles from Gainesville and had a population of 153 as of 2004. The area around the town is known as the "Potato District" because it is devoted to agriculture, especially potatoes. The area in La Crosse also produces tobacco, vegetables, and cattle. By 1860 it was established as an agricultural village mostly given over to cotton farming. A post office was opened in La Crosse in 1881 and it was incorporated as a town on December 17, 1897. |
