| Starke is the county seat of Bradford County. Its population was 5,769 as of 2004. Starke is about 8 miles west of Florida's National Guard base, Camp Blanding. It is also close to Florida State Prison, Union Correctional Institution, New River East Correctional Institution and Lawtey Correctional Institution. Many Hollywood films have been filmed in Starke including "G.I. Jane", filmed on Camp Blanding, Joel Schumacher's "Tigerland," "Basic," and "What's Love Got To Do With It." Also, Fox's "Boot Camp" was filmed near Starke and so were parts of BBC's "The State Within." |
