| Bradford County is a county with a population of 28,118 as of the estimate for 2005. Its county seat is Starke, but also includes Brooker, Hampton and Lawtey. Bradford County is best known as the home of the Florida State Prison and other state correctional facilities. Bradford County was first known as New River County when it was created in 1858. It was renamed for Captain Richard Bradford, who fought in the Civil War died in the Battle of Santa Rosa Island. Bradford County has a total area of 300 square miles of which 7 square miles is water. |
