| Calhoun County is a county with an estimated population of 13,290, as of 2005. It was created in 1838 and named for John C. Calhoun, who was a member of the Senate from South Carolina. A majority of Calhoun County's residents are more attached to Southern culture than the Central and Southern parts of the state. Calhoun County is more similar to Alabama, Georgia or Mississippi than with much of Florida. Its county seat is Blountstown, though it also includes Altha and Wewahitchka. Calhoun County's total area is 574 square miles of which 1.22% is water. The county is bordered on the east by the Apalachicola River and is bisected by the Chipola River, where the river rapids Look and Tremble is located. |
