| Wewahitchka is a city in both Gulf County and Calhoun County. Its population was 1,703 based on estimates for 2004. The city has a total area of 7.4 square miles, of which 16.42% is water. Wewahitchka is well known for being one of Florida's largest beekeeping operations, the Lanier family. The tupelo honey is extracted and bottled by them. They then place beehives on the swamps along the Apalachicola River and other rivers around the area in order to produce other beekeepers. The honey must be removed promptly before the bees have a chance to add other types of nectar. Wewahitchka hosts an annual tupelo honey festival |
