LaBelle was named by Capt. Francis Asbury Hendry in 1896, for his daughters, Laura and Belle. La Belle is the county seat of Hendry County and its total area is about 3.5 square miles. What drives the town's economy is citrus and vegetable growing. In fact, today Hendry County has more than 15 million citrus trees, more than any other Florida County. Labelle's schools are well-known for their exceptional music programs. As a result, about forty percent of LaBelle Middle School's students play in the band. Music is a large part of LaBelle's culture and many bluegrass and country musicians can be heard around town and at local events. LaBelle is also known around the world for its annual Swamp Cabbage Festival. |
