Fort Myers Beach is part of Lee County. 3.3 of 6.2 square miles of Fort Myers Beach is water. It was only recently admitted as a town, on December 31, 1995. Previous attempts to make Fort Myers Beach a municipality in mid 1940s in 1953, 1957 and 1960 were all failures. It was only in 1995 that the State Legislature allowed it to become a town. Fort Myers Beach offers a 600 foot fishing pier and Lynn Hall Memorial Park provides bathhouses and parking. Bay Oaks Recreation Center offers a place for basketball, tennis and volleyball. Along the Lover's Key State Recreation Area, visitors can rent kayaks and canoes, and there are many picnic areas and barbecue grills along the beach. Fort Myers Beach also has the Matanzas Pass Wildlife Preserve which provides a sanctuary for native plants and animals. |
