Sanibel is a city on Sanibel Island, on the Gulf coast. It is part of Lee County and has an area of 33.2 square miles, 48.13% of it is water. It is linked to the mainland by Sanibel Causeway and Blind Pass links Sanibel to Captiva Island. Once on the mainland, it is easily accessible to the Southwest Florida International Airport. Sanibel offers more than 15 miles of beautiful shelling beaches. It also offers many attractions like the Ding Darling Wildlife Refuge, local wildlife, seashells biking, fishing, golfing, snorkeling, and so much more. As a result of the main causeway being built in 1963, Sanibel was formed as a city in 1974. CIA Director Porter Goss, who was the island's first mayor and represented Sanibel in Congress, is still a well-known resident. |
