Holmes Beach is part of Manatee County and has a total area of 1.7 square miles with .1 square miles of water. Their history goes back to 1896 when Sam and Annie Cobb bought a total of 170 acres from John Jones and built a dock. Capt. John R. Jones became the third settler in Holmes Beach. However, it was only at the end of World War II that Jack Holmes created a 600-acre community within the center of the island. The film "On An Island With You" was partially filmed on Holmes Beach. One of the actresses, Esther Williams even bought property in the island. The City of Holmes Beach was officially incorporated in 1950 and this same year the Anna Maria Island Elementary School was built on Gulf Drive. Throughout the 50's, Jack Holmes built the Yacht Club Restaurant, the first shopping center on the island and The Island Bank. |
