The City of Oakland Park was incorporated in 1929. However, the subdivision of Oakland Park was established in 1923. The opening of the subdivision was celebrated with a barbecue with an estimated attendance of 5,000 people from Dade, Broward, and Palm Beach counties. Despite offers from Fort Lauderdale and Pompano Beach, the citizens of Oakland Park agreed that the community could be run more efficiently as an independent city. |
