The area was first settled in 1804 by 20 families who came to raise indigo and sugar cane. The fertile soil was (and still is) favorable for citrus and other crops which could be shipped to market on the Halifax River. Port Orange was incorporated in 1926, South Daytona in 1951. Both cities operate under a Council-Manager form of goverment. Nearby points of interest include a lovely botanical garden, Daytona International Speedway and miles of sandy beaches. Central Florida's attractions are within an hour-and-a-half's drive. The nation's oldest city, St. Augustine, is even closer. |
