| Sopchoppy is a city in Wakulla County. Its total area is 1.5 square miles, all land. As of 2000, the population was 426 and as of 2004, it was 465. Sopchoppy was created in 1894. The CT&G Railroad Company had built a railay through the area, then they platted the town on proprty that was already theirs, across the river from Greenough. They then engaged in a massive advertising campaign to encourage people to settle there. The name Sopchoppy comes from "Lockchoppe," a word derived from the Muskogee "lokchapi," which was the old name of the nearby river. |
